Definition
HIEs are the mobilization of healthcare information electronically across organizations within a region, community or hospital system. In practice the term HIE may also refer to the organization that facilitates the exchange.

Reality
Healthcare information systems are built like 20th century power grids - they are designed to transport data across closed-ended, proprietary networks.

There is no one solution that consolidates data across the billions of healthcare interactions that happen each year. Often, health care stakeholders use health information exchanges to move data from one point to another. The current health information exchanges are all scoped to a particular region, industry, corporation, government entity, or clinical use case.
